Genre tells us much more about the content of the writing.

In the same way, the genre of a piece of writing is part of its substance. If a particular book is said to be a novella, we only know something about its length. Definition: A text genre is a type of written or spoken discourse. Texts are classified into genres on the basis of the intent of the communicator. Explanation: Learning vocabulary is a very important part of learning a language. The more words you know, the more you will be able to understand what you hear and read; and the better you will be able to say what you want to when speaking or writing.

Excuse me, could you repeat the question? Answer: The challenge that the person who influenced me the most has faced was all about the struggles in life most especially in this pandemic time. The most influential people in my life have always been the people closest to me. This is a function of writers not learning more about what film genres are and what they are not.

Both dramas and comedies share an interesting quality — they can have one of many effects on an audience, depending on the exact nature of the story being told. In other words, there are different kinds of dramas and different kinds of comedies.

Note that the words used above are words that evoke a feeling or emotion. These words are subjective, and therefore speak to the entertainment experience that the audience will feel when watching these types of stories. These words are not subgenres , but they do show how genres like drama and comedy can have a wide range of impact on the audience, depending on what kind of story is being told.

We are constantly exposed to words that are meant to describe the tv shows and films that we watch, and they are often used interchangeably or incorrectly. The simple answer is this: Main genres create an emotional response as well as potential expectations of ideas.

Subgenres generally create ideas but not emotions. Here is a list of subgenres which will get their own blog post for further explanation. Note they are different from main genres:. Also note that you can take each of these words and pair it with different main genres. Subgenre classifications give the viewer an idea of the kinds of moments they will expect to see, but not creating an idea of a specific emotion.

It does create ideas of things you can expect to see — criminals, wrongdoings, weapons, theft, etc. But there have also been plenty of crime comedies.

The general rule of thumb when trying to figure out if the word you were thinking of is a main film genre or subgenre, ask yourself this question:. Do you have a sci-fi thriller? Do you have a dramatic comedy?

Or a comedic drama? These can be difficult questions to answer but it is vital to understand which genre will be the prime genre of your screenplay, and which genre is the supporting or lesser of the two. But now that you better understand film genre and how to approach it in your screenplays, go and take your audience on a ride… no matter what kind of ride it is.

Open Screenplay. Now we have to look at it as a writer does. Think of it this way. You go to the best restaurant in town and ask for a burger. Twenty minutes later the waiter brings you a tofu burger. This is award-winning tofu, prepared by a top chef.

As readers, we love science fiction and so when we become authors we want to write science fiction. Fair enough, but what kind of science fiction? Are the characters trying to survive on a desert island Lord of the Flies , William Golding?

Life would be so much easier if we all had the same menu of Story types to choose from. We have to look at it from different angles. Other books, like Outlander , are a complete conundrum. This begs the question, if the genre of Outlander is unclear, why is it such a roaring commercial success?

The answer is that at some point, everyone agreed to call it a historical romance. Its publication has since spawned the sub-genre of Scottish historical romance. The bottom line is this: genre in writing refers to the kind of Story that is being told.

For a book to be successful the author, marketer and reader must all have the same understanding of what kind of Story is being told. Sometimes you can do this accurately at the beginning of a project. Other times, you might need to crank out a first draft before you figure it out.

Both ways can work. The point is that you must make a choice. Unless we are crystal clear about what kind of book we want to write, we will get confused and lose our way in the middle build. The first thing I want to know — in fact, the only thing I want to know — is, was it comprehensible? Did [the audience] follow the Story? If you put confusion into the mix, even the tiniest bit of confusion, the audience is going to be apprehensive.

An audience needs to feel, when they sit down in that chair, that the storyteller has them by the hand and is leading them through the Story. Shawn spent 25 years grinding on this. He listened to writers explain the Stories they wanted to tell. Then he figured out a way to categorize it and explain it to the art and marketing departments so they could target the book to the appropriate readership. More on that later.

The clover has five leaves; time, reality, style, structure and content external and internal. Choosing a genre in writing means making a choice about each of these leaves. Note that the clover considers literary to be a style. The beauty of this system is that any kind of Story we can conceive, can be mapped out using the clover.
