Just to use myself as an example: I open up the in-game store because I'm thinking, "some of these cosmetics I'm seeing look pretty cool". So I figure maybe I'll spend some money and pick up a few cool ones for myself. What I come to realize is that everything is so insanely expensive that I quickly decide that none of these items are worth even close to what is being asked for them.
In the end, I decide not to buy anything at all. So here's the problem. Not only that but, had your prices been reasonable, I would have most certainly been a repeat customer. I've spent hundreds of dollars in other games I enjoyed simply because they continued to offer in-game stuff at a price that I considered to be of great value.
Now the REAL problem is that I can guarantee that there are thousands of other players just like me; players who wanted to buy something cool, saw the price, and were immediately dissuaded, probably never to return to the in-game store. What kind of business model is this?
Considering the PoE playerbase, my guess is quite a few. I know I would have, and I would have bought other things as well. Your business model just isn't good. I agree the microtransaction model here is weird, especially when considering discounts. The items here are going to be eventually discounted by half or so, reducing the price from "grossly overpriced" to just "very expensive". What does it achieve: I never ever want to buy items that are not discounted. Showing 1 - 15 of comments.
The game is free, its always been free, and it'll remain online as long as those things still sell to 1 in every 20 players.
The money goes directly to supporting the staff and server costs. The prices are a bit out there, but realistically, they are optional. Most games in the same era this was released, were charging outrageous prices for in-game game breaking items.
PoE took the route of in game reskins, storage tabs, and character slots. I personally only bought tabs, because I enjoy the game, and they are the most useful item in the bunch.

We made two lists for Rares and Uniques. The Best Path of Exile Unique Items What makes Unique Items so special is usually carrying affixes and special effects that are exclusive only to them, and unavailable anywhere else.
There are several types of Unique Items which can be found in Path of Exile: Regular Unique Items - which can drop from any source, as long as you are in a high-level zone. Most expensive Items in this group will cost between one or two Exalted Orbs, for example for decently rolled Shavronne's Wrappings or Hyrri's Ire; Unique Items with drop restrictions - a group that includes League-restricted Items, Fated Items, Boss-specific drops, specific Divination Card rewards.
A number of Items that can't be found on regular Maps are heavily demanded by high-level players. The most expensive Items that can be found in the Path of Exile but will require you to farm a very specific content are Farrul's Fur and Headhunter. Below you can find some basic info on how to get those; Legacy Unique Items - Legacy variants of currently obtainable Uniques, which have different stats or their values. These Items no longer drop in the game, nor can they be obtained in any way.
It was briefly possible during the Legacy League from Ancient Reliquaries. Obviously, Items with higher base stats are the ones that will be significantly more expensive.
A few Legacy Unique Items can reach the price of several hundred Exalted Orbs, with solid double Corruptions getting close the price of original copies of Mirror-service Rares. It could only be dropped by Atziri, Queen of the Vaal in the Alluring Abyss the level 80 area - sometimes referred to as the Uber Atziri. The current version provides Vaal Pact Passive instead, which is nowhere close to how powerful they are in the previous version pre Patch 3. Legacy Atziri's Acuity price currently starts at around Exalted Orbs.
Farrul's Fur - the second most expensive non-Legacy Item on the list. It's one of the best Armour for a lot of different builds. The high demand and its heavy drop restrictions set Farrul's Fur price at a minimum of 25 Exalted Orbs.
Opening the Portals to it is only available via Beastcrafting, so you have to be prepared to grind very Rare Bests in Einhar Missions.
